As the first architectural exhibition of this year, we have prepared a project by the Swedish atelier Tham & Videgård. It is a progressive atelier whose work is characterized by a very sensitive approach to the context of the place and the specific conditions of the given projects. Typical for Tham & Videgård is their active involvement in the entire process, from the development of initial designs to on-site supervision of the actual construction. In their approach to architecture, the authors strive to cover as broad a scope as possible; they analyze and integrate all practical, theoretical, and social questions as well as environmental issues within the process. When needed and appropriate to the situation, Tham & Videgård utilize a whole network of external advisors from various fields. This use of supplementary resources ensures that all projects deal with real challenges and optimally seize all opportunities that arise in this way. The Tham & Videgård Atelier is based in Stockholm and is run by its founders and chief architects Bolle Tham (born 1970) and Martin Videgård (born 1968). Since its inception in 1999, their practice has attracted attention for its experimental approach and innovative works. The projects of the Tham & Videgård atelier have received several national and international awards and twice won the Kasper Salin Prize for the best new architecture in Sweden. Among their main works are the new School of Architecture at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), the Kalmar Art Museum, the Swedish Museum of Modern Art (Moderna Museet Malmö), the residential complex Västra Kajen in Jönköping, a department store in Uppsala, as well as the Creek House and Mirrorcube for the "tree hotel" Tree Hotel in Harads. Bolle Tham and Martin Videgård are members of the Royal Academy of Arts in Sweden and lecture and teach at architecture schools in Sweden and abroad. In 2014-2015, they served as visiting professors at PBSA (Peter Behrens School of Architecture) in Düsseldorf. In 2017, the prestigious architectural magazine El Croquis published the fifth monograph on the work of the Tham & Videgård atelier. In that same year, this atelier was the only representative from the Nordic countries to exhibit at the Architecture Biennale in the exhibition ‘Make New History 2017’ in Chicago. For their first presentation in the Czech Republic, the architects prepared a completely new exhibition project showcasing works from the recent period, focusing primarily on the importance of "detail" in contemporary architecture. They themselves comment on this exhibition with the words: “Architecture is about the future. A building remains in place for centuries, so it’s not just about the present; it is also a form of continuing history towards the future. From this perspective, all common circumstances influencing the conception of a new building or new urban environment are secondary compared to the impact and quality of the building, that is, its effects on the environment, its architectural integrity and function, its ability to express the thoughts and ideals of society. And the final result is the only thing that matters. From this perspective, the exhibition aims to facilitate a discussion that we keep returning to in our daily work at our atelier; in this discussion, we seek the primary characteristics of a building and explore how its artistic aspects and details influence the building.”
