Brtnice (Jihlava region) - Today, an exhibition titled Josef Hoffmann-Donald Judd: Hypothesis was opened in the birthplace of architect and designer Josef Hoffmann in Brtnice, Jihlava region. The works of the exceptional American artist Judd (1928 to 1994) and architect and designer Hoffmann (1870 to 1956) are juxtaposed in the exhibition through a selection of furniture pieces and drawing designs. The exhibition was prepared for visitors by the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna in collaboration with the Moravian Gallery in Brno. As part of the vernissage, which welcomed dozens of domestic and foreign tourists, there was a concert and also an art workshop inspired by the works of both artists. Interested visitors could create minimalist furniture or sculptures from two-colored tubes and other geometric shapes in the courtyard under the linden trees. "Since the 1960s, Judd has explored the possibilities of artistic expression, focusing on surface, geometric shapes, and their application in space. He worked with various materials from plastic to metals to concrete," said gallery curator Martina Straková to ČTK. He is particularly known for his "specific objects" - closet ensembles made of steel, wood, aluminum, and plexiglass. The work of both artists is primarily connected by a gradual development towards a reduction in form, an architectural approach to creation, and a play with volume and surface. The Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice is functioning for the third season as a collaborative workspace of the Vienna Museum of Applied and Contemporary Art (MAK) and the Moravian Gallery in Brno, said Brtnice Mayor Marie Kružíková to ČTK. Since 2005, the house has regularly hosted exhibitions that follow the themes of Hoffmann's work and legacy. The Moravian Gallery in Brno and the Vienna museum are preparing a new concept for a permanent exhibition, which will be opened in the Brtnice museum next year. An unusual experience awaits museum visitors on June 27, when the gallery organizes a Museum Night at the end of the school year. This event will also include a fashion show by students from the art and design school in Helenín.
