Jaroměř (Náchod region) - The museum in Jaroměř, located in the Náchod region, opened an exhibition today entitled Eastern Bohemia in the work of Josef Gočár. The exhibition, prepared on the occasion of this significant architect's 130th birthday anniversary, will last until September 28. Olga Mertlíková, the museum director, said this to ČTK today.
"The exhibition showcases dozens of buildings designed by Gočár in Eastern Bohemia through reproductions. We are also displaying some of his unrealized projects and furniture," Mertlíková said. Additionally, the exhibition is taking place in the museum building, which was constructed by builders between 1910 and 1911 according to Gočár's design.
"For next year, we want to organize an exhibition to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the completion of this building, which will showcase the work of Josef Gočár across the entire Czech Republic," the director stated. Visitors to the Museum of Eastern Bohemia in Hradec Králové can also learn about the architect's works from mid-May to the end of October, where an exhibition of unrealized projects titled Dreams and Visions is open.
Architect Josef Gočár was born on March 13, 1880. After some early folkloristic works, the student of Professor Jan Kotěra leaned towards European modernism and, after 1911, focused on Cubism, which he helped to establish. His most famous realizations include the cubist buildings such as the House at the Black Madonna in Prague and the Spa Pavilion in Lázně Bohdaneč. Gočár passed away on September 10, 1945, in Jičín. In 2000, he was voted the greatest personality of Czech architecture of the 20th century in a poll.
