Barcelona - The Barcelona temple Sagrada Família has the highest church tower in the world. The builders have placed the lower part of the cross on the Jesus Christ tower, raising the height of the structure to 162.9 meters, reports the AP agency. This is one meter more than the tower of the cathedral in the German city of Ulm, which previously held the record.

The builders placed the lower part of the cross on the tower, which measures 7.25 meters and weighs 24 tons. The entire cross is expected to be 17.5 meters tall upon completion, according to Europa Press agency.

The installation of the cross is another stage of construction of the temple designed by architect Antoni Gaudí. Construction began in 1882 and according to previous statements from the foundation overseeing the work, it will take about another ten years to complete.

The temple under construction is already one of the main attractions of Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia. Last year, the construction was visited by 4.83 million people, which was about three percent more than in 2023. Visitors are key to financing the construction of the temple. The money collected from them constituted 97 percent of the foundation's revenues, which is responsible for the construction. The company raised 133 million euros (3.2 billion CZK) last year.

The tallest church tower in the Czech Republic is the main tower of the Plzeň Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, which rises to a height of 102.3 meters.
