Cairo - Visitors to Egypt will soon be able to explore the interior of the 4500-year-old bent pyramid in Dahshur. This was announced today by the Secretary-General of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, Zahi Hawass. The opening of the interior of this pyramid and other areas nearby aligns with Egypt's efforts for greater cooperation with the UN in developing the area while preserving the environment and ancient monuments, reported the AP agency.

Dahshur is about 80 kilometers south of Cairo. The site features a 100-meter-high bent pyramid that was commissioned by the founder of the 4th dynasty, Pharaoh Snefru. It gets its name from the fact that its walls bend at a shallower angle about halfway up. Originally, there were ten other pyramids in the area. Apart from the bent pyramid, the so-called Red Pyramid is also well-known and is already accessible to tourists.
Hawass said that the bent pyramid will open to tourists in one to two months. "It will be an adventure," he said at a press conference in Cairo.
According to this expert, there is a royal tomb somewhere inside the pyramid.
The pyramids in Dahshur are listed along with the much more famous pyramids in Giza on the UNESCO World Heritage List. However, only about five percent of visitors to Egypt come to see them. The vast majority head to Giza.
