The New York office of Steven Holl has completed an experimental project called “Ex of In House” in the village of Rhinebeck, located one hundred miles north of Manhattan. The weekend home for artists is the realization of a seven-point manifesto for the new exploration of interior spaces. The minimalist structure, with a total area of only 85 m², sits on nearly thirty acres of land in a nature reserve. The project, which dates back to 2014, was first introduced to the public last year at the WhiteBox Art Center in New York. Spherical spaces are carved into the relatively rectangular volume. All spatial requirements are maximally compressed and have equal priority. The wooden and glass house does not deny artistic ambitions, but on the other hand, it was created with the help of advanced computer programs and CNC machining tools. Inside, the house lacks any dividing partitions. The spatial division is conditioned by solar orientation. At night, the rooms are illuminated by lamps made on 3D printers from eco-friendly corn starch plastic. The energy independence of the house is ensured through geothermal heating and energy obtained from solar panels. The seven-point manifesto of the project “Exploration of IN“: 1. To study architecture freed from the purely objective. 2. From origins of Architecture we explore "IN." 3. "IN": All space is sacred space. 4. The architecture of "IN" dominates space via space. 5. Intrinsic "IN" is an elemental force of sensual beauty. 6. "IN" is useless, but in the future will be used. Purpose finds "IN." 7. The thing containing is not the thing contained.
