The jewelry company Swarovski had its Swiss headquarters built in Männedorf with a beautiful view of Lake Zurich. On this site, until 2005, the company Cerberus-Siemens produced fire alarms before relocating with its 490 employees to the city of Zug.
In 2007, five architectural firms (including Baumschlager Eberle and Theo Hotz) were invited to compete for the new headquarters of Swarovski, with the Düsseldorf office Ingenhoven Architekten emerging as the winner.
The main idea of the design is to provide as many employees as possible with an impressive view of the lake and the Alps rising behind it. This fundamental requirement led to the creation of a "horseshoe" shape with completely glass facades. Another task for the architects was to create as open and communicative a working environment as possible with a flexible and easily adaptable spatial arrangement, as well as a healthy and equal workplace for the support staff. The building, in its appearance, has a certain simplicity to optimally blend into its surroundings. The transparent facade gives the structure the required lightness. Outdoor terraces and landscaping relate to the cultivated landscape of the adjacent vineyards, meadows, and traditional orchards. The inviting expression of the building is meant to welcome incoming visitors, employees, and customers. Harmonizing surfaces and materials provide the building with lightness while also creating a sense of belonging to the company. The arched shape and largely open workspaces provide a vibrant environment. The building is meant to be a clear, transparent, and healthy place where up to 450 employees can stay, work, and live.”
