Lebbeus Bigelow Woods was among the visionaries whose utopian designs pushed boundaries. Although a large part of Woods' work will remain forever on paper, his drawings inspired many practicing architects, including New York's Steven Holl, who was the first to inform the world of the quiet passing of this great man. Lebbeus Woods died in his sleep on Tuesday, October 30, in Manhattan at the age of 72. Anticipating his end, he had already bid farewell to the readers of his blog in August. Lebbeus Woods saw his first realization just a week before his death. The permanent installation Light Pavilion is located in one of the niches of Holl's project Sliced Porosity Block in the Chinese city of Chengdu. Previously, Woods created temporary installations, the most impressive of which were the film sets for the third installment of the horror film Alien, designed together with Swiss artist H.R. Giger. Until the end of this year, proposals for a house for Lebbeus Woods can be submitted to a competition organized by ICARCH Gallery. A retrospective exhibition showcasing Woods’ impressive work is planned for February next year at SFMoMA. More information >
