This year's Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2007 has gone through a troubled path. After another architect was selected instead of Frei Otto, issues arose with meeting the deadline, and Zaha Hadid had to quickly save the situation with her “Lilas”. Now all the problems are forgotten, and visitors to Kensington Gardens can calmly pass through the temporary pavilion designed by the Norwegian studio Snøhetta and the Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson starting August 24, 2007. Since 2000, when the tradition of summer pavilions began, this is the first joint project of an architect and an artist. The wooden spiral form consists of a space wrapping around a ramp that leads to an eccentrically offset central space. Visitors enter the pavilion from the lawn and before reaching the auditorium in the middle of the structure, they must walk several turns up the ramp. From Friday, August 31, until November 11, 2007, a cultural program will run in the pavilion, curated by the authors of the building themselves. A series of lectures, exhibitions, and experiments will feature a number of artists, architects, and scientists.
