The office of SOM churns out skyscraper after skyscraper. However, this Wednesday at their Chicago headquarters, Gordon Gill introduced the project of a 69-story tower named Pearl River Tower for the Chinese city of Guangzhou, which is set to be a bold step into the new millennium. With the help of solar collectors and two wind turbines, their skyscraper will produce more energy than it will need. Two giant slots spanning the entire height of the floors will house wind turbines generating energy for the air conditioning of the entire building. The openings in the building also aim to reduce the wind load on the facade as well as to prevent the formation of wind vortices and suction behind the building. As such, the skyscraper will not only be energy-independent but also statically less burdened. The Chinese are beginning to fulfill the bold dreams of Jan Kaplický.
