On December 7, 2006, a ceremonial handing over of the keys to the extension of the Rietberg Museum in Zurich took place. The project authors are the Vienna architect Adolf Krischanitz and Alfred Grazioli from Berlin, whose competition project placed at the same site in 2002 with the Japanese SANAA. After subsequent refinement of the project, a Berlin-Vienna collective of architects received the commission with their project titled "Emerald Canopy." The new building consists of an all-glass pavilion situated in close proximity to the historic building (the Wesendonck villa) and two underground exhibition spaces (each covering an area of 1300 m²). The solitary character of the villa was preserved, and the surrounding park was simultaneously spared. The glass pavilion will serve as the main entrance to the museum.
The name of Krischanitz's project is derived from the poem "In the Greenhouse," written by Mathilde Wesendock, the first resident of the villa, and later set to music by Richard Wagner.
On Saturday, December 9, 2006, an open house will be held from 10 AM to 5 PM. At 11 AM and 1 PM, the architects will speak on site about their glass extension. The entire event will be free. The new museum will officially open on February 18, 2007. Link>
