Paris - An exhibition celebrating the 120 years of the Eiffel Tower's existence began today in its premises. Visitors have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with its history on the first floor and the steps of the building through period photographs, images, text documents, and sketches. There are also interactive computer screens available, which will offer, among other things, film footage of one of the world's most famous and visited technical monuments.

Organizers have promised that the exhibition titled The Era of the Eiffel Tower will introduce tourists to the structure from a different perspective, including parts that are not accessible to the public. It will also attempt to highlight the success it achieved despite the fact that many French people hated it at the time of its creation.
The exhibition is divided into eight independent thematic areas. One of them provides a look at the work of engineer Gustave Eiffel, who designed the over 300-meter-high tower at a time when he was already a famous bridge builder. In another area, interested visitors can see how the tower was constructed and how much work was required, for example, just to prepare its foundations.
Following initial rejection by a large part of the art community, the tower eventually became a source of inspiration for extensive painting and photography works. Exhibition visitors can see the results of work from a great number of artists as well as how the Parisian landmark has been used for various promotional purposes, particularly in advertising posters. And of course, it has its significant place among souvenirs of all kinds.
The exhibition, which will last until December 31, includes examples from many feature films in which the architectural wonder of the world has served as a popular backdrop. Tourists can also verify how much the tower has inspired similar buildings in other parts of the world, including, for example, in Prague's Petřín.
On the occasion of the 120th anniversary, the Eiffel Tower is also being dressed in a new coat. Nearly thirty painters are repainting the iron structure in a creamy brown color, so that its new layer continues to protect the building from corrosion. The work, which will last just under two years, is repeated every seven years and is now being done for the nineteenth time.
