Taipei - The first high-rise buildings began to emerge in the 1880s in the USA. At the same time, their name appeared - skyscrapers. Initially, buildings of ten to twenty stories were considered skyscrapers. Over time, however, with the development of building technologies, the criteria for inclusion in this prestigious category have increased, and the tallest skyscrapers now exceed one hundred floors. Eight out of ten tallest buildings today are located in Asia. Five years ago, on December 31, 2004, the then tallest building in the world, the 509-meter-high Taipei 101 in Taiwan, was opened.
Taller structures than buildings had recently been various telecommunications towers. The Polish transmitter Konstantynów, standing at 646 meters, was the tallest freestanding structure since it was erected in 1974. After its collapse 18 years ago, the tallest structure became the television transmitter near the city of Blanchard in North Dakota, USA, which measures just under 629 meters. However, even its height was surpassed by the Burj Dubai, which at 818 meters will be officially opened in early January in the United Arab Emirates.
