Yesterday, construction began in Zurich on a 36-story building designed by local architects Annette Gigon and Mika Guyer. In the Maag area near the Hardbrücke bridge, a 125-meter-high skyscraper called 'Prime Tower' will be built within three years, which, upon its completion in 2011, will become the tallest building in Switzerland. The tower, with a total of 40,000 m² of office space, is rising on the floor plan of an irregular octagon and, together with two low commercial buildings ('Cubus' and 'Diagonal'), forms a single complex. A publicly accessible restaurant is planned for the top floor.
The authors emerged from a highly competitive international competition. The winning project was unanimously chosen by the jury for its “crystalline exterior that precisely defines itself against the surroundings, noble movements and jumps, versatile use of pragmatically large floor plans, and a static concept with prestressed ceilings.”
