New York - One of America's iconic buildings took on the appearance of a wild beast, a marine mammal, or a soaring raptor on the night of Sunday. During a unique projection, portraits of endangered animal species appeared on the New York Empire State Building. At the event organized as part of a wildlife conservation campaign, hundreds of people saw a more than one-hundred-meter-high image of African lion Cecil, whose shooting by an American dentist sparked outrage in the USA.

According to the BBC, a total of 160 endangered species, including mammals, birds, fish, and insects, were showcased on the gigantic projection screen. According to the organizers, it was the first event of its kind on the building, which years ago became famous as the last refuge of movie King Kong.
Crowds of spectators watched the projections often from nearly 20 blocks away, where the portraits were still visible. The projection lasted for three hours until midnight local time (between four and six a.m. CEST). The event was part of a new documentary project about endangered species being prepared by the Discovery television station for December.
