Peter Zumthor

At tomorrow's ceremonial event of the Royal Institute of British Architects in London, the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor will be awarded the RIBA Gold Medal for 2013. During the evening, honorary memberships of RIBA will also be awarded. This year's laureate was decided by a committee led by the 74th President of RIBA, Angela Brady, along with a group of architects Peter Clegg, Yvonne Farrell, Adrian Forty, Niall McLaughlin, and Sarah Wigglesworth.
The RIBA Gold Medal has been awarded since 1948 to individuals or groups who have made a significant contribution to the field of international architecture. The RIBA Medal is regarded worldwide with the same respect as the Pritzker Prize, which Zumthor was awarded four years ago. The six-member jury faced a difficult choice. In addition to completed projects, they also decided to consider the future winner's publication activities and his academic influence.
The British audience was recently introduced to Zumthor through his short-term installation of the summer pavilion Serpentine Gallery in 2011. The English will have to wait until next year for Zumthor's truly first realization, when the house 'The Secular Retreat' for the nonprofit foundation of writer Alain de Botton is expected to be completed in the Devon village of Chivelstone.

'Peter Zumthor's work renews the link with a tradition of modern architecture that emphasises place, community and material practice. His writings dwell upon the experience of designing, building and inhabitation while his buildings are engaged in a rich dialogue with architectural history. I will be delighted to present him with the Royal Gold Medal.'
Angela Brady, RIBA President
