At the beginning of November, an extension to the municipal museum was completed in Rapperswil, Switzerland, by the architectural firm :mlzd. The winning competition proposal from March 2007 is titled “Janus” and crowns the city walls from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries with its bronze shell. The expressively composed “ridge” with a perforated façade is meant to create a new distinct element with a clearly readable main entrance to the museum. Meanwhile, the northern façade of the new extension remains hidden behind the city wall. The new entrance also includes a solution for barrier-free access to the museum and meets all contemporary operational and technical requirements for operation. The new extension is designed with great respect for the adjacent historical façades, ensuring it does not disrupt any existing openings. The new entrance aims to ease navigation within the museum collection and clearly delineate the threshold between the original and the new. The museum will open to the public at the beginning of next year. More information >
