Berlin – A new museum of modern art was officially inaugurated today in Berlin. Works from the 20th century are expected to be on display in the building near Potsdamer Platz starting in 2026. Current estimates suggest that the construction costs will be around 450 million euros (11.5 billion CZK). Initial plans, however, anticipated a budget of 200 million euros (5.1 billion CZK), according to the DPA agency.

The construction of the Museum of Modernity was officially launched today by Berlin's mayor Michael Müller and the government commissioner for culture Monika Grütters. The building of the new museum will occupy the last available plot in an area called Kulturforum, where several galleries, museums, libraries, and the concert hall of the Berlin Philharmonic already stand. The new museum will be located in close proximity to the 19th-century St. Matthew's Church and the New National Gallery, which will be connected by an underground tunnel.

The modern museum building was designed by the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. Its founders Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron have been involved in projects such as the expansion of the Tate Modern museum in London, as well as the design of the Beijing National Stadium and the Elbphilharmonie buildings in Hamburg.

The Berlin museum building will be very austere; according to the DPA agency, it is already sometimes referred to as a "barn." The Deutsche Welle website noted comparisons to a beer tent or a discount store.

The museum will showcase extensive collections from the New National Gallery covering the period of classical modernism, primarily featuring works by expressionists, New Objectivity painters, cubists, and surrealists. Among the artworks will be paintings by Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Hannah Höch. Works by prominent artists who operated in the former German Democratic Republic will also be included.

Some of the exhibition spaces will be adorned with items from private collections, including the collection of Erich Marx, which features works by notable artists of the second half of the 20th century, such as Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol.

The first visitors are expected to look at the new museum in 2026. Original plans had envisioned that the cultural institution would open in 2021.
