The Museum of Austrian History will move to a new location in the popular Vienna museum quarter MuseumsQuartier in 2028. The new headquarters will also include a modern sustainable wooden building that will harmoniously complement the existing buildings of the museum complex. With a significant expansion of exhibition space to over 4,000 m², visitors can look forward to an even richer experience of exploring modern Austrian history.
The Museum of Austrian History (Haus der Geschichte Österreich, hdgö) will relocate to new premises in the Vienna museum quarter MuseumsQuartier (MQ) in 2028. The architectural competition for the realization of the new headquarters was won by the office O&O Baukunst, which will bring the first expansion to the beloved cultural center of Vienna since its opening in 2001. The winning design includes the construction of a modern sustainable wooden building that will serve as the entrance area to the museum with a foyer.
The wooden building, which will sensitively connect to the existing museum quarter complex, will be made from local wood sourced from sustainable forestry. At the same time, the project includes greening the surrounding area of the building, specifically planting trees and heat-resistant shrubs, which will help prevent soil overheating and allow for the reuse of rainwater.
The new museum spaces will span over 4,000 m² across a total of five floors. Of this, approximately 3,000 m² will be used by the museum for exhibition and educational purposes, significantly expanding the exhibition programs compared to the existing spaces in the Hofburg. The museum will continue to focus on the period of Austrian history from 1848 to the present day, emphasizing the contextualization of historical events and their connection to current topics.
Construction work on the new headquarters will start in the second half of 2026, with completion expected in 2028. The project will also include the modernization of the existing buildings to meet the latest energy standards.
The architectural studio O&O Baukunst has extensive experience in implementing cultural projects. Notable realizations include a rehearsal room for the Berlin theater Schaubühne, a university library in Dresden, and the Schiffbau theater and cultural center in Zurich. The office has also previously completed several projects directly in the Vienna museum quarter.
