The architectural office of Steven Holl won an international competition for the revitalization and development of a former industrial area in Hangzhou, China. The jury, which included Wolf D. Prix, Ralph Lerner, and Adolf Krischanitz, awarded second place to the studio Herzog & de Meuron and third place to the design by David Chipperfield.
The ambitious plan called for a series of tower residential buildings, an international fair center, and integrated art galleries, restaurants, and exhibition spaces. Holl's winning design, named Shan-Shui, which translates to mountain and water, presents a water tower set in the undulating terrain at the center of the site. The northern half of the urban design forms a new recreational zone that will offer a wide range of housing options and so-called "Lantern Towers" inspired by ancient stone lanterns. The photovoltaic façade is designed to collect solar energy during the day, which the towers will then emit at night. The southern part of the area includes a large park with a public water reservoir and a dodecahedron-shaped building, a double hexagonal pyramid, that will house a hotel, restaurant, and café.
The project will be developed at the Beijing branch of Steven Holl's office under the leadership of Li Hu, who has been with the office since 2000. Holl's office has been particularly successful in China. Following the art museum in Nanjing at the end of last year, they recently completed the Vanke Center in Shenzhen, and currently have projects underway such as Linked Hybrid in Beijing, Sliced Porosity in Chengdu, and Triaxal Field in Hangzhou.
