Architects
Directed by: Peter Kahane, GDR 1990, 102 min. East Berlin 1990: Daniel Brenner, a frustrated architect on the brink of forty, designs predominantly uniform bus stops and phone booths when a lucrative offer comes from the highest authorities: Brenner is to design a cultural center for a newly built housing estate. His highly motivated team soon gets to work, but the initial enthusiasm quickly fades into the background. The demands differ greatly from reality.
Peter Kahane's film presents a unique example of the convergence of fiction and contemporary history. Kahane (*1949) belongs to the "Lost Generation" of East German filmmakers who only began their careers, if at all, in the final phase of the East German film production studio DEFA. Personal burdens, a low number of produced films, and content censorship led to many promising talents falling into waiting. Kahane's film portrays these situations in an almost haunting manner, with the difference being that the central figures are not DEFA filmmakers but architects.
