On the concept and architecture of the area for the liturgical visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. at Brno-Tuřany International Airport on Sunday, September 27, 2009, at 10:00 am Ing. arch. Marek Jan Štěpán
In front of Brno-Tuřany airport, there is a huge carpet (see image). Just like in a room, it occupies a piece of space, only on a different scale - on the scale of the local landscape. This precisely defined rectangle, measuring nearly half a kilometer on each side, is interwoven with a network of diagonal paths that form its decoration. Viewed from an airplane, the site for the mass with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. appears as a large carpet with a diagonal pattern.
This arrangement has several reasons, such as the location of the existing road, which has been integrated into the weave of paths. Another is the orientation to the cardinal points - participants will be facing east, etc. The entire area is almost exactly oriented to the cardinal points.
A special and symbolic role in entering the area is played by the old crucifix (see image) located at the bend of the road in the northwestern corner of the area. It signifies the small share of each individual in the journey of faith over time. The person who erected it surely had no idea what event would take place here in the future. This old structure marks the beginning of the main, symbolic axis of the area. At the other end of the axis is positioned a several-meter anchor (see image) - a symbol of hope and at the same time a symbol of the papal visit to Brno. This axis of the crucifix - anchor expresses the connection between generations. . Access roads to the area come from the north and west via local paved roads. Participants will be transported to the site of the mass from the west by shuttle buses and from the north on foot. Large information centers are positioned along these routes. The entire area is designed for 150,000 participants. The system of diagonal paths creates individual rhombus-shaped sectors, each for about 6,000 participants and with its own information booth. On the eastern side of the area is its focal point - the stage for His Holiness, where Pope Benedict XVI. will celebrate the mass. In front of the stage, a VIP sector is arranged in a semicircular segment.
The stage for His Holiness is completely white, covered by a canopy. The canopy (see image), as an archetype of roofing thousands of years old, has been deliberately chosen for its conservative and clear shape. It has been used throughout Europe and beyond.
However, the canopy at the airport has a very simple form and modern design. The structure of the canopy is a technically very unique membrane construction. The stage is oriented westward and is divided into three height levels and accessed by four staircases. It measures 26 x 22 m and has a height of 12 m. On the stage will be the Holy Father, his concelebrants, and dozens of bishops. Liturgical furnishings in cream color are located here.
At the front, there will be a statue of Our Lady of Tuřany (see image), the oldest statue of this type in Brno and also "local" - the area is in the cadastral territory of Tuřany. Around the stage, a circle is marked, indicating the exceptional position of this place in the area. Next to the stage stands a large wooden cross.
In addition to the stage for His Holiness, a music stage is located on the eastern edge of the area, where there will be a large choir, orchestra, and schola. A program will also take place here before the mass. The support facilities of the area are housed in large white tents. The entire area is complemented on the northern side by a tent city and on the west by a reserve area, and of course, the necessary sanitary facilities.
