Teplice - The botanical garden in Teplice will have a new storage greenhouse. It will accommodate more plants than the current storage greenhouses. Inside, the greenhouse will be divided into distinct climatic zones. Thanks to modern materials and technologies, heating costs will be reduced and comfort for employees will be increased. The garden will look for a temporary location this year to store the flowers. ČTK was informed today by the director of the organization, Petr Šíla.
The storage greenhouses, which are not open to the public and are used for pre-growing plants or storing seeds, are currently two in the garden. "Even 25 years ago, when they were built, it was said to be a temporary solution. There are only four zones, the tropical one is divided into just two parts, yet for orchids, even one degree Celsius plays a role," the director stated.
The greenhouses are made of polycarbonate, which degrades. The new one will be made of glass. The heating and the facilities for employees in the form of toilets will also be new. The botanical garden has now signed a contract for the project for construction. It should be completed within nine months, with costs amounting to 3.1 million crowns. If everything goes according to plan, construction itself could, according to Šíla, start in two years.
Botanists are now looking for places where they could temporarily place the plants from the greenhouses during construction. "Some of them will probably end up in an exhibition, some in schools where they have suitable greenhouses. The location must be no more than half an hour away from us, so that our employees can commute there," the director noted.
The total cost of the reconstruction is estimated by the city, which is the founder of the botanical garden, to be around 160 million crowns. By the end of April, the garden aims to prepare and finalize all necessary documentation in order to submit an application for a building permit as soon as possible. If it does so, by the end of 2025 a tender for the construction contractor will be announced.
The botanical garden in Teplice is the only one in the Ústí region. The development plan for the area was prepared by the architectural studio Olgoj Chorchoj, which includes, among other things, an additional entrance to make the garden more accessible to the surroundings. The botanical garden comprises a greenhouse complex and a large outdoor area. Of the total area of about two hectares, roughly half is dedicated to outdoor exhibits, while exhibition greenhouses cover an area of 2,700 square meters.
