Brno - The Orlí street in the center of Brno is set for the repair of the gas pipeline, the laying of new paving, and the replacement of a continuous line of trees, which is quite rare in the historic core. The work, estimated at 8.5 million crowns, will begin at the end of March with the felling of trees in the section from Masarykova to Josefská. According to the city, they are not thriving and are withering. The aim is to correct this situation and, along with it, to repair surfaces that deserve it, city councilor Petr Kratochvíl (ODS) stated in a press release today. The work is expected to be completed after the summer holidays.
"To achieve the best results, we are collaborating on the project with the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno, which systematically deals with greenery and its use in public spaces. The project on Orlí will be a pilot, where we will test the possibilities of planting greenery in the central part of the city, where we have very limited conditions," said Kratochvíl.
First, it will be necessary to remove the old trees at the end of March. In May, workers will move to the site to repair the gas pipeline of a private company. During the summer holidays, they will be replaced by workers from Brněnské komunikace, who will prepare a larger space for the new trees and lay stone paving according to the standards of the Brno City Heritage Reserve. "The street will be brighter, cleaner, and more representative. There will be guiding elements for citizens with disabilities, and new furniture and bicycle racks will be added," Kratochvíl added.
The city will plant the trees last in the autumn to ensure they take well. "Ten thornless varieties of mulberry trees, which are resistant to urban environments, will be added. Each individual will have enough space for roots and access to rainwater. The planting space will be enlarged, planted with perennials, and equipped with a fence to protect the plantings from damage by cars," said the director of the city architect's office, Jan Tesárek.
In addition to Orlí, the city is preparing to replace the surface in Josefská and Minoritská streets as well. The start of work is estimated to be this year or next year.
