Brno - The Brno House of Art is awaiting a major reconstruction costing 25 million crowns. The renovation is set to take place from 2006 to 2009 to ensure that exhibitions are not disrupted. The council will now select a designer for the issuance of a building permit, said Deputy Mayor Jan Holík to journalists today. The reconstruction is necessary primarily for the protection of the exhibited works.

Thanks to its architectural design, the Brno House of Art has perfect natural light for the exhibited exhibits. However, the glass roof causes extremely high temperatures in the summer months and low temperatures in the winter, which threaten the exhibited works. In the first phase, which should begin next year, air conditioning and heating will be addressed.
In subsequent phases, the management of the House of Art plans to check the building's statics and eliminate moisture, and the building will gain barrier-free access. The final phase will involve the repair of the facade.
The original proposal included much more extensive modifications costing about 130 million crowns. “But we don’t have that much money, so we, together with the director of the House of Art, looked for a cheaper solution,” Holík said. The management of the House of Art is more or less satisfied with the amount that was finally approved.
The House of Art in Brno was built in the style of Viennese Secession in 1910. After World War II, it was redesigned in the spirit of functionalism by the world-renowned architect Bohuslav Fuchs. The last reconstruction of the building took place in the 1960s.
