Brno – By the end of August, Brno will submit a request to the National Sports Agency for 300 million crowns for the construction of an athletics hall near the university campus. If the funds are received, construction can begin due to the valid building permit. This was stated today by the deputy of the mayor, Petr Hladík, and the councilor for sports, Jaroslav Suchý (KDU-ČSL). Otherwise, the project will end. The hall, costing 800 million, with an additional 100 million from the region, is expected to have a capacity of 2000 spectators and serve for international competitions. Athletes do not have a hall in South Moravia.

The hall has had a building permit for over a year, but the city has paused the project several times due to insufficient funds. "We are preparing a request for a grant of 300 million crowns. If we receive it, we can start construction," said Suchý.

According to him, the deadline for submitting the application is by the end of August. "If the state gives us the money, then the hall will be built. If not, it will not be. The contractor is waiting until the end of the year," Hladík said. He mentioned that later it would not be possible to build the hall in light of the rising prices of construction materials that have occurred due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The hall is to be built between Netroufalky and Bítešská streets, opposite the Faculty of Sports Studies of Masaryk University. It will offer 2000 seats for spectators and 170 parking spaces. It is expected to serve as a facility for athletes, who lack a hall for winter training in South Moravia. The hall should also serve Masaryk University. Its parameters meet the requirements for holding international competitions.
