Brno – Brno will consider filing a administrative lawsuit against the National Sports Agency (NSA), which halted the proceedings for the award of a grant of 300 million crowns for the construction of an athletic hall. This was stated to journalists today by the mayor's deputy Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL). According to him, the resolution to halt the proceedings is legally flawed. Hladík also noted that the city needs the athletic hall because there is none in the region. There are about 7,500 registered active athletes in South Moravia. The athletic hall is to be built for about a billion near the university campus. It is to have 2,200 spectator seats and 170 parking spaces.

The agency announced the halt of the proceedings last week. Hladík stated that a legal analysis showed that the resolution lacks arguments that have appeared in the media, such as the failure to provide a budget. "The only thing that was in the resolution talked about prohibited or public support. But I say that applies to all similar grants," said Hladík, citing the Brno multifunctional hall, for which the National Sports Agency is providing funding.

According to him, the halt of the proceedings is a political decision. "An administrative lawsuit is a logical step. We have two months from the delivery of the decision to file it. We will propose and discuss it in the city leadership. We need to build this hall for the athletes. There is no option for athletes here; otherwise, we can say goodbye to athletics. There are 7,500 active athletes in the region," said Hladík.

The National Sports Agency stated last week that it has halted proceedings concerning the grant application. "The reason is the conclusion of an irreversible obligation with the construction contractor, thus making it impossible to utilize even block exemptions for public support, and the failure to provide a valid itemized budget,” said National Sports Agency spokesman Jakub Večerka. He added that Brno can, of course, file an administrative lawsuit. According to Hladík, the agency originally wanted the budget to be submitted only after the decision on the grant was made; however, the contractor eventually created it and the agency received it.

The hall is to be located between Netroufalky and Bítešská streets opposite the Faculty of Sports Studies at Masaryk University. Initially, the construction costs were around 800 million, but according to Hladík, due to the increase in construction material prices, the cost could have risen to about a billion.
