Brno has postponed the project for the construction of an athletics hall for another six months

Brno – Brno has suspended the project for the construction of an athletic hall near the university campus for another six months, costing approximately 800 million crowns. It will negotiate with the state about possible financial support. Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS) told reporters today. The South Moravian Region has so far promised 100 million for the construction. The hall is expected to have a capacity of 2,200 spectators. The project currently has an issued building permit and construction could begin.

The city had previously suspended the project for two months during the summer, which the contract allowed. Now the council has approved an amendment to the contract that allows for a suspension for another six months without the risk of increased costs. "With the building permit, it would be possible to start construction, but we are facing problems regarding financing. We would need significantly higher support from the state, and we are talking about hundreds of millions of crowns. A clearly defined amount from the state has not been declared, and it is still unclear how the National Sports Agency stands on this," Vaňková stated. According to her, they managed to negotiate a period of six months with the contractor during which the city will try to secure financing. "We have negotiations ahead with state representatives, and I firmly believe that this six-month period will help us secure financing," added Vaňková.

The hall is set to be built between Netroufalky and Bítešská streets, opposite the Faculty of Sports Studies at Masaryk University. It will offer 2,200 seats for spectators and 170 parking spaces. It is intended to be a facility for athletes, who lack a hall for winter training in South Moravia. The hall is also expected to serve Masaryk University.
