Brno - Brno today sold the dilapidated Jalta Palace in the historic center for 101 million crowns. The property was purchased by Premiere Properties, a company specializing in the renovation of similar buildings. Jalta will reopen within two years; there will be shops, offices, or apartments in the arcade, said the company's director Richard Saliba to reporters.

Brno acquired Jalta at the turn of 2005 and 2006 in exchange for other lucrative plots and buildings. Originally, it was supposed to be renovated and some of its officials relocated there, but due to the poor condition of the building, that did not happen. Mayor Petr Vokřál (ANO) stated today at the contract signing that it is not good for the city to dispose of property that it owns. However, in the case of Jalta, after ten years, it managed to do nothing more than let the property deteriorate to its current state.

The sale of Jalta was approved by the Brno council in September. 44 councilors out of a total of 55 raised their hands for the proposal. The purchase contract includes a deadline for submitting an application for the necessary renovation permit, as well as penalties for failing to meet the deadline for submitting the application and for failing to complete the construction work on time.

The city wanted to sell Jalta several times already, but until now it has been unsuccessful. Several interested parties were there last year, but they did not pay the required deposit. Therefore, in May of this year, the city decided to give interested parties one last chance to pay the deposit by the end of June. If this did not happen, the city would convert the property into a town hall for the Brno-střed municipality.

Saliba stated today that Jalta will be renovated within two years. The reconstruction will cost about 100 million crowns. "The question will be what condition the structure is in," said Saliba. His company specializes in the reconstruction and restoration of similar properties. Examples include the Padowetz Palace or the house at the spade ten opposite the Pegas microbrewery. According to Saliba, Jalta will again feature a cinema or theater alongside shops or apartments.
