Brno - The Brno city council has canceled the contract for the renovation of the Jalta building in the city center, where city officials were supposed to work around this time according to original plans. The city acquired the property last January in exchange for other real estate from a private entrepreneur. After the elections, the leadership of Brno changed. According to the current city officials, the entire transaction needs to be reassessed. The results of the analysis will be known by March. "It must first be decided whether, based on a legal analysis, the asset exchange will be canceled or if a new negotiation with entrepreneur Miroslav Lekeš regarding the exchange will be prioritized," said Brno's deputy mayor Oliver Pospíšil (ČSSD) to ČTK today. During negotiations with the former owner of Jalta, new conditions for the asset exchange could be arranged. For Lekeš, who received three houses in the city center and advantageous land in the Pisárky and Stránice districts for Jalta, they would likely be less favorable. Pospíšil stated that the asset exchange approved by the previous Brno leadership "bears signs of disadvantage, hastiness, and irresponsible approach to the technical side." His predecessor in the position, Radomír Jonáš (ODS), anticipated that the renovation of Jalta and its transformation into an office building would cost 50 million crowns. Subsequent assessments later indicated that it would be necessary to invest 230 million crowns. "The technical condition of the building is definitely not as good as the former leadership of the magistrate assumed," emphasized Pospíšil. He clarified that without repairs, the building cannot be utilized. A year ago, it was anticipated that officials would move in by September 2006. The deputy mayor acknowledged that Jalta is an advantageous building for the magistrate to use: it stands next to other municipal properties in the direct city center. Even though it is an interesting property, the city does not have to own it at all costs, Pospíšil added.
