Český Krumlov - Český Krumlov will repair the historically protected Rechle footbridge before the start of the tourist season, as its shingle roof is in critical condition. The costs will be 1.95 million CZK, and the work is expected to last about a month. The plan was approved by the council today, said city hall spokesperson Petra Nestávalová to ČTK.

The historically protected footbridge connects the parts of Nové Spolí and Plešivec. Next to it is a weir with a sluice through which hundreds of thousands of paddlers pass in the summer. The city hall has found that it is necessary to replace the shingles on the roof of the footbridge. The first part of the work was done by the roofing company Bušta last year; the second part is expected to be completed this May, so that the work, which will last three weeks to a month, does not interfere with the tourist season. "The main thing is that it is a historical structure. The most important thing is to keep the footbridge in a condition that corresponds to the care of a historical monument," said the city's mayor Dalibor Carda (SN-City for All) to ČTK today.

The wooden covered footbridge is located in the suburb of Nové Spolí in Český Krumlov. It is 110 meters long, 2.7 meters wide, and 4.1 meters high. The current footbridge replaced an older structure between 1794 and 1798, according to the design by director of Schwarzenberg shipping, Josef Rosenauer. The last major renovation took place in the 1980s. "It is one of the longest covered footbridges from the late 18th century in our territory. It is a valuable example of the craftsmanship and aesthetic sense of our ancestors," stated the heritage protectors.

Český Krumlov will also repair other bridges. By the start of the tourist season, it wants to reconstruct the temporary bridge near the brewery, which is in critical condition and has not allowed heavier vehicles to cross since last summer. This bridge is the only possible access for such vehicles to enter the historic center of the town. Within two years, the city hall will also repair the Lazebnický Bridge, which has been attacked by wood-destroying fungi. This bridge is a cultural monument, connecting the center of the town with the castle and chateau.

Český Krumlov, which is home to about 13,000 people, is operating this year with a budget that has balanced revenues and expenditures of 400 million CZK. The city hall will allocate 70 million CZK for capital expenditures, including investments.
