Bučovice - Demolition work and clearing of the former UP factory site in Bučovice in the Vyškov region will last until the end of the year. One of the three large buildings was torn down last summer, and a demolition project for the other two is in preparation, said Bučovice Mayor Jiří Horák (KDU-ČSL) to ČTK today. The city purchased the site last year for 27 million crowns and plans to transform it into a residential area.

The six-hectare complex has been deteriorating since 1995, when furniture production ceased, and the city bought it from a private owner last winter. Originally, it contained three main buildings and about 15 smaller ones. Last summer, firefighters demolished the oldest production building.

"We have already cleared this part since then. However, we are continuously clearing the site and removing the smaller structures as well. Currently, we are preparing a demolition project for the remaining two large buildings," the mayor said. According to him, the buildings should be demolished sometime in the second half of the year.

The costs of demolition and clearing the site are expected to be around 25 million crowns. The only structure that is not expected to be demolished is the so-called Drucker Villa, which will remain as a reminder of the former glory of the enterprise.

In the future, a larger part of the site should be used for the construction of family houses and smaller apartment buildings. In the western part, there should remain open space for the establishment of a multifunctional cultural hall and a sports hall.

The factory in Bučovice was among the top in furniture production in the former Czechoslovakia and was part of the United Artistic and Industrial Enterprises based in Brno. The conglomerate had other factories, for example, in nearby Rousínov, in Koryčany in the Kroměříž region, and in Uherský Brod. The Bučovice factory specialized in bedrooms, but after the fall of communism, it was unable to secure their sales.
