Because man does not live by sports alone....

We have also prepared a cultural and musical program for Architecture Day. When one mentions the Bronx or Harlem, everyone knows, even without having been to America, what is meant negatively. However, these neighborhoods have also etched themselves into history with something positive – music, especially blues. To stay in style, the program will feature blues, and not just any blues, but the real-life blues. Boby Houda will play and sing – a musician who studied at Berklee in America, lived and played in the Bronx, and represents undoubtedly the best of this genre with us. Jana Šteflíčková, a Prague singer-songwriter and member of Studio Ypsilon – singing and guitar, accompanied by Mirko Pekar from the band Blaženka – drums, will also perform.

Come!

You are cordially invited to this afternoon by the organizer, the Zbytek association.

A view through different eyes.

Vlastimil Burian is one of the most significant natives of Liberec. He was born in a small house on Luxembourg Street. Just behind his now-demolished house began a steep slope upwards. This slope divides the center of Liberec into an upper and a lower part. Both parts of the city, including the slope, were densely built up. Therefore, between the two parts, there were a greater number of steps. From wide generous, true pedestrian paths, to narrow steps that were not intended for the public. These were steps to individual houses to allow residents to access their homes. All these steps were already there when Vlastimil Burian was born. Vlastimil Burian lived in this neighborhood in two places until he was nine years old, so it can be confidently said that he walked this way. Given that we still have six staircases preserved in a relatively small area to this day, we will utilize these steps and the personality of Vlastimil Burian for a walk or sporting competition. We will behave somewhat pathetically, comparing the image of the city with the image of Vlastimil Burian's life, as it lends itself to such a comparison.
The starting point is on Luxembourg Street about 50 meters from Vlastimil Burian's birthplace, and we begin by ascending the wide generous staircase on Mistrovský vrch street. On both sides of the stairs are large ornate buildings with stuccos. One is reminded of the parallel of Paris at the end of the 19th century. When one ascends to Sokolovské náměstí, this feeling is further intensified. Entire showpiece buildings urbanistically coherent. When we say we will trace the parallel between the city and the life of Vlastimil Burian, it would be a period in the life of a very talented and successful person in many fields, in sports, acting, singing... Whatever he undertook, he succeeded. At Sokolovské náměstí, in front of the Zlatý Beránek, we turn down Na Svahu street and come to further steps in Na Schůdkách street, in a part of the city that is not as representative but is still the upper part, where individual houses of different styles alternate. Vlastimil Burian also experienced in his life both ordinary and festive days, as life presents them. After 200 meters, we cross U Lomu street and find ourselves in front of more stairs leading to a neighborhood known as Na Ladech. Even today, this name has its justification. It is almost unbelievable that in the midst of a hundred-thousand-strong city, we find small timbered houses with little gardens and short winding streets. Essentially an idyllic neighborhood.
At the end of Studničná street, the idyllic suddenly ends, and we find ourselves in front of the old and new court buildings. How symbolic, the cold, polished granite building covered to the roof seems almost out of place here. To stick to the theme of stairs and Vlastimil Burian, a court case also comes unexpectedly in his life. We quickly pass the courthouse and, after one short and then one longer set of stairs, we descend into the lower part of the route on Široká street. Suddenly, we are in a completely different world, a different city, a different character. Only a few buildings remain from the former city. The gaps between the standing houses are large. Even those standing are waiting for their rediscovery and glory. After a few meters, we climb the long stairway once again to Na Lada, so that from the upper edge of the slope we can see the part of the city neglected and overlooked. We reach our destination at Luxembourg street via a double staircase. The desolation and neglect of the city are at their greatest here. Once again, let’s return to the parallel with Vlastimil Burian. After being sentenced for alleged collaboration, his life was probably not easy, just as this part of the city is not living its most glorious period right now. We all love the films of Vlastimil Burian, and he is no longer alive, so why tarnish his reputation by saying we behaved poorly? But what about the city's neighborhood and its rehabilitation? There is a great opportunity to come in, demolish, and build a new beautiful neighborhood, free of bad memories and guilt. But perhaps, with a more discerning look, one finds the charm of the different layers of the city. This run is not an activist endeavor or a political protest, but an activity for a variety of perspectives. Some will run out of personal competitiveness, some because of Vlastimil Burian. Others from a desire for community. For another, it is an opportunity to look over the architecture of this part of the city over the weekend. It is indeed very specific that in such a small area in the middle of the city, one experiences so much diversity. Even if someone comes just to please the organizers, that is a sufficient reason.
