Prague - Seven films have been nominated for the Pavel Koutecký Awards for the most distinctive documentary work. Interested viewers will be able to watch them in special screenings from June 2 to June 7 in Prague, Ústí nad Labem, and Plzeň. The name of the winning director will be announced on June 10 at the Archa Theatre in Prague. The spokesperson for the 8th edition of this event, Martina Chvojka Reková, announced this today.
Among the advancing titles are the film DK by director Bára Kopecká about architect David Kopecký, Pirate Networks by David Čálek and Jakub Zahradníček about the phenomenon of piracy in the seas off the Somali coast, Show! by Bohdan Bláhovec about the dark side of fame of the girl group 5Angels, Great Night by Petr Hátle capturing the atmosphere of night Prague, Liebe Indigo by Saša Dlouhý about the life journey of Halka Třešňáková, Parta Analog by Martin Dušek about television matadors, and Felvidék - Horná zem by Vladislava Plančíková. In this case, it is a personal story related to Slovak-Hungarian relations.
"This year, audiences in Prague will see the nominated films not only in the traditional Letenské sady and the Světozor cinema but also in Dejvice at the café Už jsme doma and on Kampa at the Containall cultural center. Outdoor screenings will be free for the public. In the regions, the films will be screened in Ústí nad Labem at Fokus kafe, Café Max, Armaturka Gallery, and the Mumie cinema, and in Plzeň at Café Restaurant Kačaba," said Chvojka Reková. Part of the screenings will again include discussions with their creators.
Organizer of the Pavel Koutecký Award Jarmila Poláková appreciates this year's nominated films for not focusing solely on themes related to the "Czech basin," noting their thematic diversity and reflection of issues happening elsewhere. "Their directors are patient observers of the closest and most personal world, but they also bring narratives on seemingly distant topics," she said.
Director Pavel Koutecký (1956-2006) was one of the most prominent figures in Czech documentary filmmaking; he did not live to see the premiere of his most famous film Občan Havel. The award bearing his name has been given to his successors since 2007. In previous years, it has been awarded to Jan Šikl, Filip Remunda with Richard Komárek, Tomáš Škrdlant, Martin Ryšavý, Linda Jablonská, Klára Řezníčková, Pavel Abrahám, and Tomáš Bojar.
The organizers have put a limited number of tickets for the ceremonial award announcement on sale for June 10 at 8 PM at the Archa Theatre. Tickets can be purchased at the box office of the venue.
