Hrádek nad Nisou – The Evangelical Church Temple of Peace (Friedenskirche) in Hrádek nad Nisou has been designated as a cultural monument. It is an example of Saxon Protestant architecture, built in the Neo-Gothic style with Neo-Renaisssance elements. The entire structure has been preserved in a very authentic style, including the interior furnishings, said Alžběta Sakařová, spokesperson for the National Heritage Institute in Liberec.
The church from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries stands in Hrádek at the crossroads of Husova and Lutherova Streets, near Horní náměstí. Together with the evangelical churches in Nové Město pod Smrkem and the Church of Christ the Savior in Frýdlant, it represents an important testament to the expansion of Protestant faith in the region during this period, according to conservationists.
The design of the Temple of Peace for the Lutheran Church was created by German architect Johannes Vollmer. Construction began in 1900, and it was completed a year later. After the expulsion of the German population in 1945, the church was confiscated by the state and assigned to the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. "The Temple of Peace is still used for liturgical purposes. It also functions as a cultural center and is a popular tourist destination," added Sakařová.
The church is not the only building from Hrádek and the surrounding area that has been added to the list of monuments this year. Another addition was the so-called Grössler Chapel from 1697, which is an early Baroque testament to the piety of former residents of Hrádek. This year, Wohlmann's farm in Václavice was also added to the list of monuments, whose current appearance dates from renovations between 1908 and 1933. According to conservationists, the original rural homestead is an exceptional first-republic object of its kind. The area around Hrádek is said to be very rich in interesting heritage sites. The most famous is probably Grabštejn Castle, with the first mention of it dating back to the 13th century.
