Brno - European experts on architecture and monument restoration will study plans for the restoration of the Functionalist Tugendhat villa in Brno. The original version has faced criticism from a part of the professional community due to its drastic intervention in the foundations. The city will hold a professional conference in June. The mayor's deputy, Daniel Rychnovský (KDU-ČSL), told ČTK that the repair has been repeatedly discussed from a legal standpoint. The upcoming meeting should focus on the technical details of the reconstruction. Brno has developed project documentation for the restoration of the villa, which, as the only Czech building of modern art, is listed on the UNESCO list. It was created by the Association for the Tugendhat Villa, led by the Omnia company, for 9.5 million crowns. A valid building permit exists for the documentation. According to Rychnovský, the circumstances of the tender for the project were widely discussed in the past, but less was said about its professional qualities. The conference should change that. The project emerged from a competition that city councilors canceled last year after several court and antimonopoly office decisions. As a result, there are documents sitting in boxes at the investment department of the city hall for which the council has no valid proof that it acquired them legally. According to Rychnovský, lawyers need to resolve this issue. However, he emphasized that the city hall has no other study, and according to the monument preservation authorities' decision, the first phase of the repair - the roof and structure - must be completed by mid-2010. If experts approve the project from a professional standpoint at the conference, the likelihood that the villa will be restored according to it will increase, he said. Architects, monument restoration experts, UNESCO specialists, and descendants of the original owners will be invited to the conference. The Tugendhats have shown interest in the villa in the past and requested its return from the city two years ago. They explained this step by stating that the city, as the owner, neglects the villa and continues to postpone the necessary restoration. The councilors rejected the request for return. According to the deputy, the meeting should calm the conference participants. "The monument has a world character, so the entire process is being watched by the European public, which is observing how we proceed, whether we are sleeping or active. This is a signal that we are not sleeping," said the deputy.
