Frýdek-Místek - The Český dům in Frýdek-Místek will be reconstructed according to the project by architects led by Filip Vítek from Brno. They won in the architectural-urban competition to which three teams applied. The project involves the renovation of the historical building, which will be complemented by a wooden extension. The city aims to create facilities for children's leisure activities in the building. This was announced to journalists today by Mayor Petr Korč (Naše Město F-M). The architects estimate that the transformation of the Český dům will cost approximately 135 million crowns.
The dilapidated Český dům, along with the surrounding land, was purchased by the city last year for 19.9 million crowns. The opposition criticized the purchase at that time, claiming that the material was poorly prepared and lacked some documents. The city then announced a competition for the future form of the historical object. According to the city management, the result is a proposal for a sensitive reconstruction with an extension that will not compete with the historical part.
"If the city had not acquired the building, it could have disappeared permanently. At the same time, we have acquired and consolidated a vast area, which allows us to address the entire locality comprehensively. We want to consolidate all the buildings functioning as the Klíč leisure center into the object," stated Korč. According to him, the city’s goal was to preserve the historical building while also adding a large gym and two dance halls. After the reconstruction, the leisure center is expected to gain more comfortable spaces near the park, while its operation should also be more economical.
"The winner was agreed upon by the expert part of the jury, the city management, and the operator of the center. We unanimously chose a winner who met all the requirements. I believe we can achieve very interesting architecture," Korč noted.
The building is awaiting repairs, and plans include insulation from the inside to preserve the historical appearance of the facade. The new extension is designed to be made of wood. The city expects that it could announce the competition for the contractor in 2027. "The total mass does not exceed the height of the original building and does not compete with the historical building; on the contrary, it creates a balanced whole with it. We also appreciated the placement of the main operations, clubrooms, and classrooms in the old building," stated the city's chief architect Lucie Šidlová.
After the reconstruction, a city-funded organization will be based in the building, offering about 200 clubs attended by approximately 2,000 children. It also organizes camps and other activities. With the scope of its activities, it ranks among the largest leisure centers in the Czech Republic. Currently, it is located in three buildings in the city.
"Consolidating activities into one building will be absolutely wonderful. Moreover, we are gaining a perfect location in the city. It is truly a strategic place. It is more accessible and safer for parents and children," stated the director of the center Patrik Siegelstein.
