Hradec Králové - The Hradec Králové city hall wants to build an underground bicycle parking garage at Riegrovo Square near the main train station. The city council approved the release of 18 million crowns at their meeting today. The project will still be approved by the councilors at their meeting on September 27, the spokesperson for the Hradec city hall, Magdaléna Vlčková, informed ČTK.

According to the city's plans, the new parking garage could be built within two years. "Given that this is a location with a high frequency of people in a small space, and additional buildings would be architecturally unacceptable, the only option is to place the so-called bicycle tower underground," said Jindřich Vedlich, deputy mayor of Hradec Králové. Above ground, there should be only a portion designated for the receipt and release of bicycles, while the rest of the technology would be hidden underground.

A bicycle parking tower has been functioning at Riegrovo Square since 2013, when it was built by a private entrepreneur. People pay five crowns for all-day bicycle parking, and the tower is relatively well-used. However, the existing tower will need to be moved due to the planned demolition of the Černigov hotel, next to which it stands. The second bicycle parking tower in Hradec Králové is located near the shopping center on Brněnská Street.

The city originally planned to build bicycle parking towers in the area of the Hradec hospital and in the university campus as well. However, the Office for the Protection of Competition (ÚOHS) canceled these tenders. Meanwhile, the city council has reassessed its intentions and wants to build bicycle parking near the train station first.
