Teplice - The observatory in Teplice is opening to the public after the largest reconstruction in its history. Between the two domes, a new building with a viewing terrace has been created. People will be able to admire the architecturally interesting structure while observing the sun or the night sky.

The reconstruction included the replacement of the roof and ceiling structures, and the terrace also received a new facade, including insulation, a complete replacement of internal installations and social facilities, and interior modifications. The work was funded by the Ústí Region, which is the institution's founding body. "The total costs amounted to approximately 25 million crowns," said the region’s spokeswoman Lucie Dosedělová today.

The construction includes new utility connections, landscaping around the building, new outdoor lighting, fencing of the area, and a higher level of security for the observatory.

The Teplice observatory and planetarium, along with the observatory in Most, welcome about 12,000 visitors annually. The original building in Teplice on Písečný vrch was constructed starting in 1957. At that time, enthusiasts from the astronomical club of the Teplice museum took on the project within the framework of the Action Z, which involved unpaid volunteer work.

The facilities have improved following the reconstruction for both visitors and staff. "We believe that visitors will be interested in coming to the observatory," said the director of the observatory, Zdeněk Moravec, to ČTK today. The observatory also offers programs for schools. "People who come will see a modern building with top-notch equipment. In addition to the possibility of observation in both domes, there is now also the option of observing from the walkable roof of the building," added Moravec.
