Olomouc - A new library opening on Thursday at the Olomouc Department of Art History will offer several thousand volumes focused on Czech and European art. It has found its home in the Art Centre of Palacký University. It is named after Václav Richter, the founder of art history as a field of study at Olomouc University. The project of the new library was designed by architect Tomáš Machovský, the university spokesperson Gabriela Sýkorová Dvorníková informed CTK today.

"Our goal was to create a quality background for students' daily study. At the same time, we wanted to build a dignified environment for the scientific work of academic staff. The professional work of art historians is not possible without a quality library, especially foreign literature," stated Jana Zapletalová from the Department of Art History at the Olomouc Faculty of Arts.

The Richter Library had been functioning in the department since its revival in the 1990s but primarily served as a reference library for educators. It was only made available to students for on-site loans after it moved to the university's Art Centre, representatives of the university stated.

The Václav Richter Library will offer readers several thousand volumes of scholarly literature and several dozen titles of professional journals. "The core part of the collection comes from the legacy of this significant professor. Another part has been obtained since 2011 from the legacy of Professor Milan Togner, one of the founders of the department. His extensive and very valuable collection, particularly foreign literature, was temporarily stored in the basements of the Palacký University Armory since 2012 due to capacity reasons," the university spokesperson added.

The department representatives are also transferring hundreds of other Czech and foreign titles to the library, which have been purchased in recent years through grant funding. Until now, this collection had nowhere to be placed, added Jana Zapletalová.

Palacký University has its own Central Library located in the building of the former Theresian Armory. It serves students and researchers from all faculties of the university, as well as the general public.
