Brno - The South Moravian Region will repair the Monument of the Mound of Peace near the village of Prace in the Brno area for over six million crowns, which was established in honor of the victims of the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. The reconstruction will have two phases. One will address the humidity inside the monument, and the other the cracked ceiling in the adjacent museum building, said regional councilor Jiří Němec (KDU-ČSL) to reporters today. "There is a significant amount of humidity in the monument, and it condenses on the walls. In the past, we have tried several times to solve this problem, but we never succeeded satisfactorily," stated Němec. Therefore, a survey was conducted last year to assess the humidity and temperature conditions in the chapel, including airflow. Based on the study, a project was created. "This year, we will begin to rectify the sad state. Up to about three meters high, the chapel walls are damp and moldy, so we have to remove the plaster, dry the masonry, and then install heating electronic elements under the new plaster. These will temper the walls to prevent moisture," said Němec. Workers will replaster and repaint the spaces. The shafts that served for ventilating the area and drainage of the Mound of Peace will also be reconstructed. "During the construction modifications, the monument may have limited access," noted the councilor. The second repair concerns the ceiling of the adjacent museum building. "There are trees close to the building, and the roots have begun to disrupt the structure's stability. That is why the ceiling has cracked," Němec added. The region wanted to complete the repairs this year, which marks the 210th anniversary of the Battle of Austerlitz, but the deadline is likely not to be met. "However, the repairs should be completed in the first half of next year," concluded Němec.
