Kutná Hora Town Hall is preparing the construction of a new library

Kutná Hora - The Kutná Hora Town Hall is preparing to build a new municipal library. The current building no longer meets the requirements for a modern facility, it is small, lacks barrier-free access, and its operation is expensive. The new library is expected to be located at the bus station. The city will apply for European grants for its construction, said Mayor Ivo Šalátek to ČTK.
“The council has already approved the preparation of project documentation for the zoning process. It is another step towards being ready to apply for European grants. The project costs are 1.1 million crowns,” he added. According to him, the project is generous, but a municipal library with a regional scope deserves it.
The construction of the new facility has been discussed for several years. The current library is located in a historical building on Husova Street in the center of Kutná Hora, and the possibilities for its expansion and modifications are limited. Therefore, the town hall commissioned a project for the new library. It is the work of the architectural studio Projektil architects, which also designed, among other things, the National Library of Technology in Prague-Dejvice. The implementation costs will be in the tens of millions of crowns.
The Kutná Hora Municipal Library has over 160 years of history. In 1843, several local people donated 840 volumes to it, but it was officially established only five years later. The first reading room in the city was then opened in 1898 in the old town hall in the Kamenný dům.
Currently, the library registers around 4,500 readers, which is nearly a quarter of the population of Kutná Hora. Approximately 70,000 people visit it annually. Furthermore, the library is one of five in the Central Bohemian Region that fulfills a so-called regional function. It provides professional assistance to more than 200 municipal libraries.
