Liberec - The Technical University of Liberec this year celebrated the 60th anniversary of its founding and will finally have its own dignified auditorium. The ceremonial hall, along with other laboratories and lecture halls, will be located in the new Building G for nearly 400 million crowns, which is expected to be completed in the first half of next year. The construction of such a building was considered as early as the 1950s when the university was established, but the school was only able to realize this plan now with the help of European subsidies, rector Zdeněk Kůs told reporters today.
The construction of the new research, development, and educational complex G is one of the largest investment projects in the university's history. The only larger project was the construction of the Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies, and Innovations for nearly 800 million crowns, which was officially opened last autumn. However, the investment in the university does not end with the construction of Building G. "We are preparing additional projects worth about 150 million crowns," said the rector. The school aims to build its own kindergarten for 56 children on campus, as well as a student club, and is preparing the reconstruction of Building P in the center of Liberec and also Building C in the university campus.
"The kindergarten and student club will be created by renovating part of the former development workshops, which are now largely unused," Kůs stated. A kindergarten with two classes is expected to be established in this part, which would primarily serve the employees and students of the university. "We wanted to open it this year, but only one applicant registered for the contractor competition, so we had to repeat the process. We would like to open the kindergarten next year," Kůs added. The construction of the kindergarten and the adjacent club is estimated to cost between 20 and 30 million crowns. The reconstruction of Building P is estimated at 70 million, and Building C is expected to require about 50 million crowns.
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was established in Liberec in 1953. From the beginning, it focused on fields typical for industrial production in northern Bohemia - the design of machines and equipment for textile, glass, clothing, and ceramic production. In 1960, it split into two faculties - mechanical and textile. Four more faculties were added between 1990 and 1995, when the faculties of education, economics, architecture, and mechatronics were gradually accredited. Later, the Institute of Health Studies and the Institute for Nanomaterials and Advanced Technologies were also added. Over the past 60 years, the university has educated around 33,000 graduates, and today approximately 8,400 young people are studying there.
