Brno - Concerns about excessive noise are being raised among the residents of Brno's Židenice due to a controversial project to rebuild the railway junction in Brno. In the section that runs very close to homes in the city district, the current track is to be expanded from two to four tracks. Residents have drawn up a petition and will present their demands at the public hearing on the zoning process on Thursday. Dušan Krátký from the Židenice for Citizens association said this to journalists today.

The regional hygiene station has already addressed the assessment of future noise exposure and agrees with the project. However, according to Krátký, the proposed noise mitigation measures are insufficient. Residents claim that the assessment did not take into account the current noise load and other factors. Therefore, they demand more detailed studies and an examination of an option to build a glass tube that would block noise and not require the cutting down of surrounding greenery. However, they do not dare to estimate how much more expensive such an option would be.
"We are not against the railway reconstruction, as we consider it to be ecological, but we demand such compensations that will maintain the quality of living," said Krátký. They are prepared to address their demands to the European Union through their MPs.
Židenice city councilors also demand increased noise protection, the construction of more bridges so that the track does not act as an impassable barrier, and compensation for property owners. The management of the Railway Infrastructure Administration, which is the investor of the construction, previously informed ČTK that it would respond to the raised comments.
The reconstruction of the railway junction in Brno has been discussed for several years. The project is expected to cost almost 25 billion. The most disputes revolve around the relocation of the main train station 800 meters further south. Opponents point out that the move will complicate public transport travel and will also exhaust the city treasury for many years. They argue that reconstructing the station in its current location would not threaten the quality of living for Židenice residents. Supporters, on the other hand, claim that the relocation will allow modern train sets to use the station and will contribute to the development of the city center.
