Sokolov - The urban study of the area around Lake Medard near Sokolov will be developed by the architectural office A8000. They won the tender. The architects will prepare a plan for future development around the former Medard mine, where new residential neighborhoods, recreational areas, and technological facilities are to be established. The area around the lake is to become a vibrant center of the Karlovy Vary region, said Pavel Tomek, chairman of the supervisory board of Sokolovská uhelná, to reporters today.
The architectural studio A8000 is focusing on the uniqueness of the location. According to architect Martin Krupauer, the entire project for the utilization of the lake is multi-year, but the first steps will begin immediately. "It will take about a year or two to finalize the study because what we presented today is just the winning competition proposal. But only the discussion with the region, municipalities, and citizens will begin. Then there will be a territorial study, a change in zoning plans, which will take about a year or two. That puts us somewhere around 2025. And I believe that the easier implementations could start in 2026 or 2027, and the more complex ones around 2030," Krupauer told ČTK.
The winning proposal is based on six pillars. The first is the water itself - the shore, which, according to the study, should remain unbuilt except for the eastern part, where construction is already being prepared. The next pillar is the new City of Port, as the authors named it. A city with up to 5,000 residents that will connect freely to the lake's surface and merge into the residential development in Svatava. Another part of the project is residential areas above the lake, on the excavated layers, which could provide an exceptional space for family houses. In the southeast part of the lake, the study's proposal includes a sports and recreational area. On the western side of the lake, the authors of the study plan a "smart location" where there could be wind or solar power plants, for example. A kind of symbol for the new use of the lake is to be the construction of the Island, a modern structure that seems to rise from the surface, equipped with modern technologies, which could serve as accommodation, a hotel, or even a scientific center.
"We must bring a new kind of work with new earnings and new neighbors and investors to the region. Preparing the area around Lake Medard will lay the groundwork for further investments that will contribute to the development of the locality and the entire region and support investment development projects," Tomek stated. According to him, the initial costs for the infrastructure will be around 600 million crowns, and Sokolovská uhelná or the sister company SUAS Group plans to utilize subsidies from the Just Transition Fund. The Medard project is one of the priority projects in the Karlovy Vary region.
Lake Medard is located in the mining area of the former open-pit mine Medard. It was opened in 1918 and extracted in an area defined in the southern part by the Sokolov - Cheb railway line, and in the northern part by the municipalities of Kluč and Habartov. During its existence, the mine absorbed three other extraction sites, namely the Libík (Dukla) mine, the Gustav mine, and the Dvory small quarry. The Medard mine itself was composed of two parts. Medard II, which ceased extraction on September 9, 1975, and the larger Medard I, where coal was mined until March 31, 2000.
The flooding of the mine pit lasted from 2008 to 2016. It required about 150 million cubic meters of water from the Ohře River. The area of today’s lake is 493.44 hectares. Its length is four kilometers, width approximately 1.5 kilometers, and its volume is 120 million cubic meters of water. The maximum depth of the lake reaches about 50 meters.
