New York - The painting by Amedeo Modigliani was auctioned today at Christie’s in New York for 170.4 million dollars (approximately 4.3 billion CZK), setting a record for this Italian artist's work. The oil painting, measuring about 60 by 92 centimeters, depicts a naked sleeping beauty, as expressed by the French title Nu couché.

A record amount of 95.3 million dollars (2.3 billion CZK) was also achieved for the canvas Nurse by American pop art master Roy Lichtenstein at the same auction.

Pablo Picasso's painting Women of Algiers became the most expensive artwork sold at auction this May. At Christie’s in New York, one version of this famous canvas sold for 179.4 million dollars (4.4 billion crowns).

The highest sale prices are achieved by artworks sold privately from private collections. The current record is held by the painting by French painter Paul Gauguin from 1892 Nafea faa ipoipo (When will you marry?), which was sold in February this year from a private collection in Switzerland for nearly 300 million dollars (7.4 billion CZK), likely to Qatar.
