Prague - The Cubist House U Černé Matky boží, which introduced visitors to Czech Cubism in architecture and fine arts, is not yet opening a new exhibition. The National Gallery, which previously used the space, left the building on September 1 last year. A new exhibition was supposed to be created in the first half of this year, but it is not yet clear when it will open. At least a café operates in the house, which is a replica of the original one from the time the house was built, managed by a private company.

The new exhibition is to be prepared by the Museum of Applied Arts, which was ready to take over the spaces as early as October, but negotiations between the State Cultural Fund, the Ministry of Culture, and the Museum of Applied Arts continued. The house belongs to the State Cultural Fund. “We are still waiting for a statement from the Ministry of Culture, which we have already urged. UPM has prepared a concept for the Cubism exhibition. We are just waiting for instructions from the ministry so that we can physically start with the exhibition,” said UPM spokesperson Jana Ulipová to ČTK.
“The Ministry of Culture expects that the spaces in the House U Černé Matky boží will be used for a cubism museum, however, at this moment we are dealing with issues that have a higher priority,” said ministry spokesperson Lenka Brandtová.
The Cubist building designed by Josef Gočár in 1912 is expected to undergo partial repairs and a new exhibition, according to Ulipová. It will emphasize a richer representation of interior design, whose collection at UPM is unique worldwide. It will be supplemented by examples of applied graphics, fine art, and architecture. Visitors will encounter furniture by Pavel Janák, Josef Chochol, Josef Gočár, and Vlastislav Hofman, posters by František Kysela or Jaroslav Benda, and a selection of works by Emil Filla, Josef Čapek, Bohumil Kubišta, or Otto Gutfreund.
