Prague - Workers have begun repaving parts of the newly renovated embankments on the right bank of the Vltava River in Prague. A strip will be created that will have a surface more suitable for cycling. The work will be completed next spring at a cost of 13.3 million crowns, the city reported to ČTK today. Currently, there were classic cobblestones there.
"The paving made of the largest cobbles with a rounded surface is reminiscent of the famous cobblestones. Along with the original traffic regime, which hardly restricted automobiles, they were the reason for the significant unpopularity of the embankments among cyclists," said councilor Petr Štěpánek (Green Party).
The New Town and Old Town embankments are part of one of the main routes. However, a large number of cyclists prefer to ride on the road, on sidewalks, or in tram lanes, the councilor noted.
Last year, during the repair of the embankment at Na Františku, workers used smaller cobblestones for part of the paving. On the New Town embankment, they tried grinding the cobbles and filling the joints. According to Štěpánek, the situation did not improve. Therefore, a different paving is now being done.
There will be two 35-centimeter wide strips made of unpolished stone slabs on the embankments, which are also suitable for road cycling. Between the stripes will be small paving. The lane will serve for overtaking cyclists. This year, car traffic has already been significantly restricted on the embankments, Štěpánek added.
