Brno - The Tugendhat Villa in Brno will be occupied by filmmakers. Director Julius Ševčík will start filming the movie Glass Room there in March, based on the novel of the same name by Simon Mawer. This was announced to journalists by Alice Titzová on behalf of the filmmakers.
British writer Mawer was loosely inspired by the history of the functionalist villa, the only Czech monument of modern architecture listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The main storyline features a fictional love story set in Brno, primarily in the villa named Landauer in the book and film.
Director Ševčík has cast Karel Roden along with foreign stars for his new film. Carice van Houten is known to viewers from the series Game of Thrones, while Swedish actress Hanna Alström is known from the British spy comedy Kingsman.
The premiere of the Glass Room is currently planned by the filmmakers for spring 2019. The villa, including its garden, will be occupied on several scheduling blocks when the monument will be completely closed to the public. The individual phases will last from March 1 to 17, from June 11 to 18, and then from July 1 to 16.
The villa's operators will inform about the potential opening of the villa to the public on their website and Facebook profile.
The book Glass Room received a nomination for the prestigious Man Booker Prize in 2009. A theater play based on it was also created in Brno, which was added to the repertoire of the City Theater three years ago, directed and adapted by Stanislav Moša. According to the theater's website, the production collected 55 performances.
The villa of Greta and Fritz Tugendhat, built in 1929 and 1930, was designed by the renowned Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. From 2010 to 2012, the villa underwent a heritage restoration, returning to its appearance from the 1930s. The interior features exact replicas of the original furniture. The glass wall of the villa offers a view of the garden and the city.
