Prague - Architects and organizers submitted 186 works to the Czech Architecture Award competition. This is a fifth more than last year. New buildings dominate over reconstructions, with 123 entries, or about two-thirds. Almost half of the submitted works are residential buildings, and two-fifths of the competing works were created in Prague or Brno, with Prague itself accounting for a third. This was communicated to journalists today by spokesperson for the organizing Czech Chamber of Architects, Tereza Zemanová. The nomination evening will take place on June 13, and the winners will be announced on November 14.

This year, works built in the Czech Republic between 2014 and 2018 could enter the competitive showcase organized by the Czech Chamber of Architects. Almost two-thirds of the buildings, 118, were completed last year. Data from the submitted buildings showed that the average time taken to build them was three years and ten weeks. This figure is lower than what is generally stated for buildings. This is due to the fact that even small works can enter the competition, and according to Zemanová, among the submitted buildings are those that took more than ten years to complete.

Private investors are behind 136 projects, which is three-quarters of the submissions. Among the remaining fifty public contracts, the traditional share of reconstructions is more prominent, making up two-fifths of them. Seven buildings submitted for this year's showcase emerged from an architectural competition with confirmation of regularity from the Czech Chamber of Architects.

These include the Mourning Ceremony Hall in Valašské Meziříčí by Kanceláře archislužba.cz, the Sports Hall in Kuřim built by Cuboid architects, the reconstruction of the pub with a hall in Máslovice by Atelier bod architekti, the architectural design of the interiors of the Constitutional Court by Moad architects, Podzámecký Park - Tyršovy Sady Pardubice (New Visit), a footbridge over the Lubina River in Příbor (Petr Tej, Marek Blank, and Jan Mourek), and the revitalization of Masarykovo náměstí in Stříbro (M&P Architekti - Landscape Architecture). A catalog of all submitted projects is available on the competition website.

Two-fifths of the buildings, or 74, were created in Prague or Brno, which is an increase compared to previous years. Prague works have a ten percent higher representation than last year and make up a third of all submissions (64). In terms of the number of projects competing for the award, the Central Bohemian Region leads (27), followed by the Moravian-Silesian (17) and Hradec Králové Regions (10). No building represents the Karlovy Vary Region in this year’s showcase.

The winner of last year's award was an administrative building made of lightweight concrete in Strančice by David Levačka Kraus. It is located in an industrial area and was commissioned by a company that manufactures concrete mixtures.
